SUSAN ST. JOHN

Susan earned a BA from Bennington College (Literature) and an MA from Yale (Architecture). Having grown up in the summers in Maine, Susan became manager of a family partnership for the Bates Morse Mountain Conservation Area Corporation in Phippsburg, Maine after her retirement in 2002.

During the intervening thirty years, Susan focused on weaving together the practice of domestic architecture in Colorado and midcoast Maine and the teaching of Outward Bound, primarily on - and from - Hurricane Island, Maine, but also in Africa and Britain. She mixed all with the raising of her and her late husband, Bob Rheault’s, two children, Nicholas and Alexis. Her focus was primarily on the Family: houses for families, courses for families, their own family.

Her book TO SAIL BEYOND THE SUNSET chronicles the development of Outward Bound from 1964 to 2006. She lives in Owls Head from where she can see Hurricane Island across the bay.
