The Hurricane Experience

Each day is an adventure on Hurricane Island.

Our hands-on science curriculum offers unique opportunities for students of all ages to explore and connect with the natural world along the rocky shore of Hurricane Island. The many activities we build into our lesson plans such as rowing, rock climbing, and swimming all help to shape the emerging leaders who leave Hurricane Island feeling more empowered to build a sustainable future.

Sustainability is the way of the future.

The way we prepare our food, source our energy, and monitor our water consumption are all ways we practice mindful living on Hurricane Island. By educating young leaders from all over the world about our sustainable practices, we are sharing a mindset that will unite our global community through sustainable action, whether big or small!

Educate to illuminate.

The young scientists who come to our program will learn the tools of the trade as they navigate how to design and implement their own investigative studies. Field guides, binoculars, water quality testing equipment, compound and dissecting microscopes, transect tapes, and dissection equipment are just a few items we employ. Our staff are trained biologists and educators and we regularly enjoy having visiting scientists and lecturers to be a part of our community.

Advance science through collaboration and community.

The Hurricane Island research team works with the surrounding community to develop questions and connections in aquaculture and marine biological pursuits. This specialized team manages a 3 acre farm to the north of the island where we currently grow scallops and kelp for research purposes. We work with local fisherman and organizations to help advance the aquaculture industry by using science to help understand the questions we face as a society.

Hurricane Island is our home.

The transient community of Hurricane Island is defined by a unique history of the quarrymen from the 1800’s, Outward Bound adventurer’s of the 60’s-00’s, and now scientists, researchers and educators who come together to educate and learn about the unique ecosystem where Hurricane Island is. All who come to the shores of Hurricane Island, whether it be for one afternoon while out cruising the bay, a whole summer as a seasonal educator, or perhaps a lifetime for locals who love Penobscot Bay, will find community here on Hurricane Island!
