Statement of Community

The Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership is committed to the development of global stewards who are considerate of our common humanity. We strive to promote an inclusive environment honoring the experiences of each individual and to increase awareness of diverse backgrounds, values, and perspectives. To achieve this goal, we aim to create a secure and welcoming community, which respects the contributions of all individuals and embraces open and collaborative dialogue. All members of our community have a responsibility to uphold these expectations.

How are we upholding our Statement of Community?

We are…

  • Creating visual material so that people entering our spaces feel welcomed and supported as part of the Hurricane Island community, and see themselves represented as scientists and changemakers.

  • Partnering with organizations, schools, and donors to increase equitable access to experiential education.

  • Working towards equitable hiring practices to reach and reflect the populations we serve.

  • Providing job opportunities with competitive compensation packages offering access to collective learning and professional development.

  • Developing curricula to include more equitable and inclusive pedagogy; specifically concerning decolonization, privilege and identity, and anti-racism.

  • Converting our bathrooms and showers to gender inclusive facilities and exploring this approach for the rest of our campus.

  • Educating our board and staff on best equity and inclusion practices.

  • Soliciting feedback from participants and the broader community to evaluate the efficacy of our work.
