Hybrid Wilderness First Responder

Wednesday April 24 - Sunday April 28*

Join Wilderness Medical Associates International on Hurricane Island for the In-Person portion of the Wilderness First Responder certification course. Pre-course content can be completed remotely.

*This course model requires 30+ hours of pre-course work including textbook learning and completion of a study guide and online exam followed by 45+ hours of in-person learning over the course of five days.

Come join cookbook author-instructor Chris Toy and master woodcarver Ken Wise on historic Hurricane Island for a weekend of Asian fusion cooking and wood carving. With Ken's Wise's guidance, participants will make utensils for preparing and eating recipes inspired by some of Chris Toy's cookbooks. There will be time to learn about the island's fascinating history and to explore its wild remote beauty.

These one day workshops include a tour of our 3.2 acre experimental lease site, conversations about growing methods and spat collection for sea scallops, health metrics, and specialized aquaculture gear. Additionally, participants will have time to explore our 125 acre island campus and join conversations about aquaculture in K-12 education.

Foraging Wild Mushrooms on a Maine Island Workshop

Friday August 30 - Sunday Sept. 1

Join Greg Marley, a Maine-based mushroom expert and author, for a weekend of mycorrhizal magic. The weekend will be all about wild mushrooms: a mix of field excursions and discussions to increase skills for learning your mushrooms, as well as cooking opportunities. Come prepared to enjoy the beauty of a rugged Maine island and to experience outdoor learning.

The remains of late nineteenth century granite mining and finishing operations at Hurricane Island are a testament to a very recent instance of humans' enduring relationship with stone. Taking an historical-ecological approach, this summer's archaeological field program will embrace the challenge of looking at humans' relation with stone across millenia, as made manifest by the material remains at Hurricane Island.
