Press Kit

As the first offshore marine field research station in Penobscot Bay and only the 2nd in Maine waters, we are excited to grow our community of scientists and educators through strategic partnerships, and we are eager to facilitate any press with visits to the island, interviews with staff and board members, and connections to our institutional and commercial partners.

  • MISSON: We integrate scientific research and education on a Maine coastal island to develop leaders prepared to address environmental issues in a rapidly changing world.

Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership (Hurricane Island) is a Knox County nonprofit that serves as a critical connector of scientists, fishermen, educators, students, and leaders along the Maine coast, preparing citizens to be advocates for science-informed decision making and stewardship. It is our mission to integrate environmental education, applied scientific research, and leadership development through year-round educational programs in schools and seasonal programs on our environmentally sustainable island campus in Penobscot Bay.

Our research agenda prioritizes collaborative projects with relevance to commercial fishing and marine industries and we partner with a network of field stations and labs to coordinate investigations that directly benefit our coastal communities. Our collaborations with higher education institutions to offer graduate and undergraduate students unique opportunities for hands-on marine research. We integrate these scientific initiatives into STEM education programs, offering students and educators an unparalleled opportunity to engage with authentic field research.

  • Our sustainable shore-based facility will serve as a visual epicenter for our mission, sustainable campus, and commitment to science research and education on Hurricane Island. It will increase capacity for year round research in Penobscot Bay and expand our institutional and academic capabilities.

Hurricane Island is situated at the confluence of the Eastern and Western Maine Coastal Currents as well as the discharge from the Penobscot River and the Field Research Station is perfectly positioned on a gradient of estuarine and marine habitat to establish and participate in research on climate change, fisheries biology, fisheries management, alterations in Penobscot Bay, and the wider Gulf of Maine ecosystem.
