Teach a Course on Hurricane

From mid-April through mid-October, the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership welcomes groups of up to 60 overnight for any length of time, depending on space availability. We work with colleges and universities to offer a field experience that expands the typical lecture hall or lab and enhances student learning by providing a field component to a traditional course. With unique access to marine and terrestrial systems, courses can be specialized to the needs of you and your students. If you are interested in bringing your course to Hurricane, please contact us to discuss your ideas!

Past Field Courses offered by Colleges and Universities:

  • Bowdoin Marine Science – Long term intertidal zone research project that has been collecting data on Hurricane’s intertidal zone for the past 6 years as part of a marine semester course.

  • UMaine Honors College – Intro to marine science for incoming freshmen in the UMaine Honors College.

  • Brown Geology – Biannual field study course investigating the geology of Hurricane Island and Penobscot Bay.

  • University of Vermont – Biannual marine ecology field study course.

  • Maine Maritime Academy -- Phycology Class, assessment of algae in waters surrounding Hurricane.

  • College of the Atlantic -- GIS mapping survey of the island and long term natural resource inventory conducted with COA students.

Field Courses Offered by Partner Organizations:

Archeology Program – Each summer Hurricane works with archeologists to lead a course researching the island’s native indigenous and quarry town history. This is an ongoing research project investigating consistent archeological sites where data is recorded for future research work.

Bird Banding – The Institute for Bird Populations collaborates locally, nationally, and globally with individuals, government agencies, and NGOs in diverse fields to assess the effects of land management actions, climate change, and other ecological stressors on bird populations.  Each summer Hurricane works with the Institute for Bird Populations to lead a course training bird researchers in proper bird banding technique.
