Program

Join Greg Marley, a Maine-based mushroom expert and author, for a weekend of mycorrhizal magic. The weekend will be all about wild mushrooms: a mix of field excursions and discussions to increase skills for learning your mushrooms, as well as cooking opportunities. Come prepared to enjoy the beauty of a rugged Maine island and to experience outdoor learning.

  • Friday:

Afternoon transport from Rockland to Hurricane

Island briefing and housing assignments

Evening gathering to introduce each other and the topic

  • Saturday:

    Morning collection and exploration hike

    Mushroom ID basics lecture

    2nd Collection walk

    Mushroom edibility and toxicity

    Joint dinner with option to cook collected mushrooms

    Medicinal mushroom lecture

  • Sunday

    Chanterelles and scrambled eggs for breakfast if the collecting is good

    Sunday morning integration walk and discussion

    Where to go from here as closing discussion

    Pack up and transport back to Rockland

Instructor

Greg Marley has been collecting, studying, eating, growing and teaching mushrooms for over 45 years. He has spread his love of mushrooms to hundreds through walks, talks and classes held across New England over the past 30 years. As a volunteer mushroom identification consultant to Poison Centers across New England since 2001, he provides expertise in mushroom poisoning cases. When not mushrooming, Marley works as a mental health clinician and behavioral health consultant specializing in suicide prevention.

Cost and Logistics

$500/adult for the weekend ($100 non-refundable deposit due at time of registration). This cost includes transportation between Rockland and Hurricane Island, all food and housing, all programming, and all facilities. Please plan to arrive at the Rockland Ferry Terminal early enough to check in with us to get your (provided) ferry tickets, and be prepared to board the ferry on time for the 2:45pm departure (an hour ahead is recommended).
