Data Literacy and Curriculum Design Focused on Penobscot Bay
2026 Dates
August 14 - 16
Program
Join us for this exciting weekend to acquire new skills, enhance your data literacy, and build a network of support for climate action in your community. Using live data sets from buoys deployed across Penobscot Bay, participants will have the opportunity to explore patterns, trends, and visual representations of data that reveal changes taking place in one of the most rapidly warming, salt water bays in the world. Making use of Hurricane Island’s new Field Research Station, we will examine temperature, salinity, oxygen, chlorophyll, and other indicators of marine ecosystem health. Connect with colleagues, learn more about data literacy, and engage with others to create exciting teaching and learning opportunities for your students!
Learning Objectives:
Gain a solid foundation in data literacy topics
Examine live data sets gathered from Penobscot Bay
Take time to reflect on the personal strengths and challenges associated with data literacy work
Consider ways to integrate data into classroom teaching, including data visualization through art
Explore relevant data sets specific to your local school and community
Instructor
Will Galloway, Director of Education and Programs at Hurricane Island, will lead the 3-day workshop. He brings over 25 years of experience working with students, teachers, school administrators, higher-education administration, for-profit and non-profit organizational leaders, and community-based, climate action projects. He teaches the Basic and Advanced Mediation training courses through the University of Maine, and consults locally and nationally on conflict transformation applications, especially in the context of community-based, climate action work.
