Outline
These one day, stand alone, workshops will include a tour of our 3.2 acre experimental lease site, conversations about growing methods and spat collection for sea scallops, and more. Additionally, participants will have time to explore our 125 acre island campus and join optional conversations with Hurricane Island Staff about our farm, our programs, and our mission. Each day is geared towards a specific audience, though we welcome anyone who wishes to attend. A full schedule will be made available prior to the workshop.
Cost and Logistics
Participants will depart from Journey Ends Marina, in Rockland and travel directly to Hurricane Island on our passenger vessel, Sunny. We will meet at 8:30am and return by 5 pm. Due to the capacity of our boat, we are limited to 16 participants. Forms will be accepted on a rolling basis and are first come, first serve. There is no cost to attend.
About Our Farm
Hurricane Island was granted our 3.2 acre experimental lease site in 2019. Previously, the organization held LPAs located in the same spot. We are permitted to grow sea scallops (Placopecten magellanicus), blue mussels (Mytilus edulis), Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica), sugar kelp (Laminaria saccharina), and winged kelp (Alaria esculenta). The majority of our research efforts and aquaculture education is based around sea scallops.
