Visit us on Hurricane!

We love to welcome boaters from around the world to our shores during the summer season. We are more than happy to greet you and orient you to the island map and tell you about our programs. We have moorings (see below) open and available to the public on a first come first serve basis.

AS OF JULY 21, 2023, WE HAVE FOUR MOORINGS SET AND INSPECTED FOR PICK UP BY LARGER VESSELS. We can also accomodate several skiffs and smaller boats on the mooring field. Please contact us on VHF channel #16 or #68 when approaching the mooring field if you need directions to an open mooring.

There is a mooring fee of $25 per night and $15 per day. Click here to download our trail map.

If you are looking for information about how to get to our Rockland Office for a program, visit our Directions page.

Summer 2023 Island Use Policies

Thank you for your interest in visiting Hurricane Island for the 2023 season!

  • Hurricane Island is open to visitors who are able to travel to Hurricane Island using their own boats. Visitors should drop off passengers at our floats and then put their boat on a mooring if available per our standard guidelines.  We do have dinghys available to use for this purpose.

Trail System

We have a variety of trails to the north and central parts of the island that are publicly available (day use only). The southern end of the island and private houses there are off limits. Please respect their privacy and do not pass any “private” signs. Trail maps are available at the head of the main pier. We ask that as you hike around the island you do not enter any buildings and that you watch your step: There is unstable granite, and it can be extremely slippery when wet.

Camping

At this time there is no camping on the island unless you are a Maine Island Trails Association member. Pets should be leashed, and owners should pick up after them.

Moorings

Kayaks and dinghies can land on the sandy beach on the north end of the island. Larger boats landing at the float on the eastern side of the island should contact staff on VHF 16, and limit themselves to unloading and loading only.

Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership has several guest moorings and a small dinghy that is available if you need to travel between your mooring and the float.
Moorings are available on a first come, first served basis; however, Hurricane Island may reserve moorings for our own use during special island events. There is a mooring fee of $25/night and $15/day.
