Leadership and Conflict Transformation

For Climate Action

2025 Dates

June 27-29

Program

Join us for this exciting weekend to acquire new skills, enhance your leadership capacity, and build a network of support for climate action in your community.

Participants will explore the premises and practices of the Conflict Transformation approach and will have the opportunity to reflect on their personal and professional experience to identify the forces that drive conflict transformation, especially in the context of bringing about change through climate action.

In pairs and small groups, students will apply the premises and practices of this model to relevant climate action scenarios, learn how to engage a diverse group of stakeholders, gain insights from island-based, hands-on activities, and explore a wide range of strategic moves to work with others and not against them to achieve climate action goals.  Individual self-assessment through a mini solo will provide participants the time to assess and articulate more clearly their personal strengths and challenges in applying the conflict transformation approach for climate action.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain a solid foundation in the Leadership and the Conflict Transformation approach

  • Apply the premises and practices of Conflict Transformation through coached role plays and group activities on the island.

  • Take time to reflect on the personal strengths and challenges associated with this work

  • Consider ways to integrate this model into other contexts, both personally and professionally

  • Develop skills to work with others and not against them to achieve climate action goals.

Instructor

Will Galloway, Director of Education and Programs at Hurricane Island, will lead the 3-day workshop.  He brings over 25 years of experience working with students, teachers, school administrators, higher-education administration, for-profit and non-profit organizational leaders, and community-based, climate action projects.  He teaches the Basic and Advanced Mediation training courses through the University of Maine, and consults locally and nationally on conflict transformation applications, especially in the context of community-based, climate action work.
