A Special Thank You Message From Our Team

Dear Friend of Hurricane Island

Hurricane Island sits at a unique location within the Gulf of Maine where the island currents converge to mix ocean nutrients and nurture ecological productivity. Our work on the island is creating similar conditions through mixing multigenerational talents to build professional knowledge, skills and leadership capacity while developing both regional and international networks  to address the complex environmental challenges facing us today and tomorrow.

Through our work with Maine communities that are rural and urban, coastal and inland, fishing and farming, we are realizing the potential the island, our staff, and our networks have for bringing people together to solve problems. Increasingly we see:

  • Our middle and high school students collecting data alongside scientific researchers to better understand strategies for diversifying the fisheries of Penobscot Bay.

  • Our research staff establishing connections between research institutions and local communities to better understand what data is needed and what it is telling us.

  • Our alumni students and staff employed by the academic, governmental, and non-profit institutions in Maine and beyond to creatively address a range of environmental issues on land and in the water.

In order to prepare the next generation of scientists and problem solvers, we need to provide them with the resources they need for success. As we continue to develop exceptional island-based programs, please join me, our staff, and our board in supporting our work.  Your continued financial contributions will help us maintain our momentum building the confluence of people and ecosystems that is Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership.

We are so grateful for your support!

Sincerely;
