Teacher Portal

Dear Educator,

We are excited about hosting you on Hurricane Island! Before you arrive, we want to be clear about the expectations we have of all teachers, chaperones, and students to ensure a safe and productive trip. The more we can count on you to be present and available to help out with your students the more smoothly the program will run.

Here are the guidelines we expect of chaperones for every school program:

  • Teachers/Chaperones are responsible for participant supervision at all times. This includes during programming as well as at the beginning and end of the program days and during sleeping hours. Hurricane staff will be busy teaching and delivering programming for the duration of your time on the island, so we are counting on your support to keep kids on task and on schedule.

  • Teachers/Chaperones are responsible for providing supervision of students in housing units overnight.

  • Teachers/Chaperones are responsible for the dispensation of participant medication as directed by the student’s prescribing physician. If any students have prescribed medication, the teacher/chaperone needs to collect it before they depart for Hurricane Island.

  • Teachers/Chaperones are responsible for the care of a suspected or COVID-positive individual from their school.

  • Teachers/Chaperones and all students will adhere to all rules, guidelines, and procedures set forth by Hurricane Island, its staff, and/or as indicated by signage, documents, and forms.

You will find a list of our guidelines below. They mostly revolve around safety as we are considered a "wilderness context" as defined by the amount of time it takes to get from Hurricane to definitive medical care. The Group Participant Agreement is also linked below. Please read this aloud to your group and sign before your arrival at Hurricane Island.

Finally, you will also find a packing list, travel information, driving directions, further information on our facilities, and frequently asked questions. You are welcome to download and share these materials with your students’ families to help.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation. We are looking forward to having you on Hurricane Island, and we appreciate your help in making it a success!
