Exploring the Marine Ecosystem Through Art
September 25-28, 2025
Program
This program is for adults eager to engage with Hurricane Island’s breathtaking coastline, hiking trails, and diverse marine ecosystems through the creation of artwork. Participants will hone their observation skills and gain inspiration by exploring the island’s rich intertidal zones and learn about the fascinating adaptations required to survive in such a harsh environment. Harnessing inspiration from the intertidal flora and fauna, participants will engage with various forms of printmaking, including block prints, cyanotypes, and the traditional japanese method of fish printing, gyotaku.
Participants will also engage with Hurricane Island’s aquaculture farm and the rich lobster fishery of Penobscot Bay. Through experimentation and play with watercolor paint, participants will learn techniques for both scientific and abstract painting. Throughout the weekend there will be plenty of time for exploration, relaxation, and engagement with the island community and off-grid sustainable systems. This program is open to all adults and does not require any artistic skill or experience.
