Barney received his bachelor of arts from Colby College and his masters in educational leadership from the University of Maine. He began his career on Hurricane Island in the late 60s as an instructor, diver, photographer, and program director for the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School. While with HIOBS, he helped found the Nimbus program at Lincoln-Sudbury High School in Massachusetts. He then taught at Vinalhaven HS before moving to North Haven island in Penobscot Bay in 1973. Barney was a teacher and later principal for 21 years at North Haven Community School (NHCS). He retired from NHCS in 2012, then took over as executive director of the Hurricane Island Foundation in March 2013. Barney continues to live on North Haven with his wife, Christie, executive director of Waterman’s Community Center, and two of his six children.
