Unearthing the Quarry Town: An Archaeological Inventory of Hurricane Island


This 5-day program will provide participants a solid understanding of the process of setting up dig sites, creating an inventory of artifacts, and practical, hands-on experience excavating different sites around Hurricane Island. The first day of this program will include a discussion about Hurricane Island from Eleanor Motley Richardson, author of Hurricane Island: The Town that Disappeared, followed by a tour of the Vinalhaven Historical Society, and other historical quarry sites. The rest of the program will focus on developing an initial archaeological inventory of Hurricane including:

  • Surveying geology & stratigraphy to identify likely sites
  • Mapping site location and dimensions
  • Understanding 4 main types of artifacts: Metals, Glass, Ceramics, and Pipes
  • Cleaning, identifying, and recording artifacts retrieved

Program Cost: $650, includes room, board, instruction
Program Size: 12-18 participants, must be at least age 16 to participate
