Learning Retreat for School Leaders


The Hurricane Island Foundation is excited to announce the second annual Learning Retreat for School Leaders! Please join us from June 28 – 30, 2015 on Hurricane Island! 

Our retreat is designed to support school leaders tackling the real challenges they face, within an invigorating and supportive environment. The retreat will help participants acquire new leadership skills, provide time for action planning and the creation of specific plans of improvement.

Who: School/District teams of teacher leaders (mentors, department heads, team leaders, etc.), principals, superintendents, or individuals

How much: Tuition: $500/person, $450/person in a team (two or more educators involved in a specific initiative).  CEUs awarded. Includes all lodging & meals, and boat transportation to Hurricane

Description: Participants will work with a team of skilled facilitators,* who will assist with your leadership planning. Having expert eyes and ears will increase your effectiveness and maximize your time and efforts. These are the types of challenges past participants have worked on:

  • Planning team worked to establish a Freshman Academy, complete with student and staff team-building activities & curriculum planning.
  • Develop strategies for reaching out to a disengaged staff member
  • Strengthen the effectiveness of the administrative team in a newly forming district

Faculty: Richard Ackerman (Professor, UMaine & Courage to Lead facilitator); Doug Babkirk (Cooperative Extension educator & Courage to Lead facilitator; Linda Bowe (Graduate Instructor, UMaine, elementary principal, & school coach); Gloria Delsandro (assistant principal, Bar Harbor); Gordon Donaldson (Professor, UMaine); Barney Hallowell (Executive Director, Hurricane Island Leadership Foundation); Tom Edwards (Asst. Professor, USM). Roland Barth, widely read author, will join us for a day (Professor Harvard University former director national Principal's Center), adding his unique touch of philosophy and wisdom.
