Deer Isle-Stonington High School Marine Studies Life Science

Hurricane Island is incredibly excited to be collaborating with Deer Isle-Stonington High School (DISHS) Pathways students to establish a kelp aquaculture site on the Island this fall.  Using funds from Hurricane Island's recent SEANET grant, DISHS students will use reproductive tissue from kelp to create "seed lines" that will be grown in the classroom until they are ready to be deployed.  The Marine Studies Life Sciences students will come out to Hurricane to deploy their lines in October and return to harvest the kelp next spring.  We are partnering with Poptech innovators to help enhance our long term monitoring of the site including biotic and abiotic factors.
